Old School: Essays on Japanese Martial Traditions: Ellis Amdur

read ellis amdur's "hidden in plain sight", one of my favorite books on o sensei's elusive power, i was looking forward to reading the new edition of old school. as usual, amdur challenges us with his insights in this must-read collection on the japanese martial traditions. more than the study of antique weapons, self-defense or a form of athletics,Koryū, literally, ‘old flow from the past,’ refers to japanese martial traditions that predate the sweeping cultural changes that followed the meiji restoration of 1868. the book spans the ancient history of koryû to today, when modern japanese life makes koryû life at once more accessible, with koryû that would not even practice in public in ages past now providing demonstrations for tv, selling pre-recorded instructional videos and websites, yet in many ways they are less accessible than ever because of the self sacrifice, time commitment, and strictly hierarchical, often hereditary leadership required to remain true to form.

Being Old School: An Interview with Ellis Amdur on the Classical

i wholeheartedly recommend this book, especially if one is interested in traditional martial arts. he has also published three books on martial arts, a work on the art of psychotherapy (body and soul), and two works of fiction. this book is a masterpiece and deserves to be in any serious martial artist's bookshelves. the first edition of old school, ellis amdur, a renowned martial arts researcher, and himself an instructor in two different surviving koryū, gave readers a rare glimpse into feudal japanese warrior arts, both as they were in the past and as they live on today.
