    there’s something redolent of witchcraft about gustave courbet’s woman with a parrot, this image of a full-length nude reclining on her couch and communing with an avian familiar. the more a woman looked like a bad roman copy of a greek statue, the better. remarkable presence not only resolves the nagging problem of the painting’s composition, but also the problem that has plagued viewers as to the orientation of model and painter, fried insisting that courbet could now have painted the woman’s face without himself having approximated the position of the newly revealed figure. the slight lifting of the woman’s garment – do we dare read anything into that gesture that may result in the equivalent bare legs?

as the smooth texture of the hair is emphasized by the roughness of the drapery, the realistic weight of the woman’s body is beautifully countered by the relative weightlessness of her raised arm and the bird. it’s difficult to make out the type of parrot but it looks like it may be a budgie. even domesticated, the bird is unpredictable, spontaneous, and courbet’s snapshot-like realism captures the spontaneity both of its flight from perch to hand and of the woman’s reaction, her unexpected and perfectly human smile. read an interesting article from 1973 about the painting (that also includes information on the relationship of women and parrots as seen in art and literature through the centuries), click here and go and download it.
